How to Maintain a NIFTY Options Trading Journal

How to Maintain a NIFTY Options Trading Journal

1. What Is a Trading Journal?

A trading journal is a record of your trading decisions, observations and results. It helps you understand your strengths, identify mistakes and improve your trading discipline.

A trading journal does not guarantee profit, but it can help you learn from your experience.

2. What Should You Record?

For every trade, record the following information:

  • Date and time

  • NIFTY market direction

  • Option type: Call or Put

  • Strike price and expiry date

  • Entry price and exit price

  • Quantity and lot size

  • Reason for entering the trade

  • Planned exit or stop-loss

  • Actual profit or loss

  • Brokerage and other applicable charges

  • Lessons learned

3. Example of a Trading Journal Entry

The following is a hypothetical example, not a live market trade.

  • Date: 14 October 2026

  • Instrument: NIFTY option

  • Strategy: Long Call

  • Entry premium: ₹100

  • Exit premium: ₹90

  • Quantity: 1 illustrative unit

  • Gross result: ₹10 loss

  • Reason for entry: Expected an upward market movement

  • Lesson: The expected movement did not happen as planned

The actual net result would also depend on the applicable contract quantity and trading charges. The example uses one illustrative unit only.

4. Record Your Reason for Every Trade

Before entering a trade, write down why you are considering it.

For example:

  • What is the market trend?

  • Which support or resistance area are you watching?

  • Which technical indicators did you review?

  • What could prove your market view wrong?

  • What is the maximum possible loss?

After closing the trade, compare your original reasoning with what actually happened.

5. Track Your Emotions

Trading decisions can be influenced by fear, greed, frustration or overconfidence.

After each trade, record how you felt and whether your emotions affected your decision.

Examples:

  • Entered too early because of fear of missing out

  • Increased quantity after a previous loss

  • Exited according to the original plan

  • Followed the trading plan despite market fluctuations

6. Review Your Journal Weekly

At the end of each week, review your records.

Ask yourself:

  1. Did I follow my trading plan?

  2. Which mistakes occurred repeatedly?

  3. Were my losses within my planned risk limits?

  4. Did I account for trading costs?

  5. What can I improve next week?

Do not judge your performance based on just one trade. Look for patterns across a meaningful number of trades.

7. Calculate Your Results Carefully

Record gross profit or loss separately from charges.

Net result = Gross profit or loss − applicable trading costs

When reviewing performance, consider the number of trades, average gains, average losses and whether you followed your plan.

A profitable day does not necessarily mean a good decision, and a losing trade does not always mean your analysis was careless. Review the process as well as the outcome.

8. Conclusion

A trading journal is a useful learning tool for beginners. Record your decisions honestly, review your mistakes and improve your discipline over time.

Focus on learning and risk awareness rather than trying to make a profit every day.
